Leidos signed an agreement with the Pentagon to provide 3,000 low-cost containerized munitions.

The defense contractor said Wednesday it will expand its workforce and enhance facilities in Huntsville, Ala., and McEwen, Tenn., to produce the missile munitions.

Production of the munitions is company-funded to align with the Pentagon's desire to use commercial products, Leidos said.

Leidos started work on the munitions in December, reaching a conceptual design capable of achieving the government's objectives. Full design, development and testing will result in production starting in 2027, Leidos said.

The munitions are bigger than some of its other missile programs, offering increased fuel capacity.
