A summit of the Brics group of major emerging economies ended without a joint statement on the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran, and an acknowledgment by host country India that members were divided over the conflict.
"There were differing views among some members" about the situation in the Middle East, and members "shared a range of perspectives," India's foreign ministry said in a statement following the two-day summit. Many members of the group had stressed the conflict's economic consequences, the statement noted.
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, whose country is a member of the group, attended the summit and publicly urged the Brics countries to condemn the U.S. and Israeli campaign against his country.
The Brics group initially centered on Brazil, Russia, India and China but later expanded-first to add South Africa, giving it the acronym "Brics," and later Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E.
