At the time of writing, spot gold was trading near $4,539.40 an ounce, down 2.40%, while spot silver was trading at $75.910, down 8.94% on the session.Industrial production increased 0.7% in April after a 0.3% decline in March. Manufacturing output rose 0.6%, utilities output increased 1.9%, mining output slipped 0.1% and capacity utilization rose to 76.1%. The stronger-than-expected production print added to a week of hotter inflation data, leaving gold and silver exposed to the same rate repricing that pressured equities, bonds and industrial metals.The Strait of Hormuz remains the live geopolitical hinge for the metals and energy trade. The waterway is still effectively constrained after the U.S.-Iran conflict, with traffic far below pre-war levels and U.S.-Iran negotiations showing no visible progress after the Trump-Xi meeting. Tehran says vessels can pass unless they belong to countries at war with Iran, but the physical market is still treating Hormuz as de facto blocked. The impact on gold is still two-sided: the conflict supports safe-haven interest, while crude above $105 for WTI and Brent near the $110 area feeds inflation expectations, lifts yields and keeps non-yielding metals under pressure. The sharper cross-asset reaction is in oil, long-end yields, the dollar, energy equities and rate-sensitive technology shares.U.S. equities were weaker late in the session as the bond-market selloff spread through risk assets. The S&P 500 tested the 7,425 to 7,435 support zone, the Nasdaq pulled back near historic highs and the Dow attempted to settle below 49,500. Energy stocks were the relative winners, while basic-materials shares weakened alongside precious metals and utilities came under pressure from higher Treasury yields.The key outside markets see Nymex WTI crude oil prices higher and trading around $105.30 a barrel, while Brent crude was near the $110 area.
