Restaurant Relief On Horizon as Grocery Inflation Gap Narrows -- Market Talk
Dow Jones05-19
1309 ET - The sluggish U.S. restaurant sector could be getting some uplift soon as the inflation gap between away-from-home food and groceries narrows, UBS analysts say in a research note. Restaurant price inflation was 3.6% in April compared with 3% for groceries--still higher, but narrowing from March and the smallest gap since three years, the analysts say. Restaurant pricing should continue to ease modestly in the coming quarters as previous price hikes roll off, they say. Consumer confidence meanwhile has improved across all income cohorts, according to the analysts' survey data. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
