What Happened in Markets Today
Tech stocks fell as investors rotated out of AI-focused stocks. Nvidia, which reports earnings on Wednesday, fell 1.3% and the Nasdaq declined 0.5%. The S&P 500, which has become increasingly exposed to tech stocks, fell less than 0.1%. The Dow Jones Industrials advanced 0.3%.
Investors remain concerned that the disruption to energy markets poses a threat to the global economy. Futures tied to Brent crude, the global crude benchmark, have floated up to about $112 a barrel. Treasury yields stabilized after closing at their highest level in over a year on Friday. President Trump posted a message on social media late Monday saying he had postponed strikes on Iran that had been planned for tomorrow, citing progress in talks.
Dominion Energy has agreed to be acquired by NextEra Energy in what would be one of the largest deals of the year. Dominion shares were up 9.4% while NextEra's were down 4.6%.
UnitedHealth Group's stock dropped 0.7% after Berkshire Hathaway disclosed late Friday that it had eliminated its stake in the company. Berkshire also said it bought shares of Delta and Macy's last quarter. Delta and Macy's were each up less than 1%.
President Trump will host a swearing-in ceremony for incoming Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the White House on Friday. The previous new Fed chair sworn in at the White House was Alan Greenspan in 1987. More recent ceremonies have been held at the Fed.
