Nvidia plans to set up an artificial-intelligence research lab in Singapore, as part of the U.S. chip maker's broader push into automation and robotics technology to drive growth.

The new lab will focus on embodied AI, the fusion of AI with physical systems that power automated manufacturing and robotics, Josephine Teo, Singapore's minister of digital development and information, said Wednesday.

The Nvidia lab will also work to improve the efficiency of training AI models and lower the costs of operating its hardware infrastructure, the Singapore government said in a statement. Currently, Nvidia has researchers based in Shanghai and Taipei who focus on these fields.

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang sees AI interactions with the physical world as the next frontier of the technology, betting on it to address bottlenecks in industries from manufacturing to healthcare.

Industry participants say such applications can consume tens of thousands of times more computing power than texting with a chatbot. Meanwhile, labs face a shortage of data and other technical hurdles in advancing the capabilities of the AI models behind such applications.
