Inflation-weary consumers haven't given up their summer vacations.
United Airlines said Tuesday it expects 53 million travelers this summer--about 3 million more than last year.
Demand is particularly strong for destinations tied to once-in-a-lifetime moments such as a total solar eclipse in Europe, international soccer matches and major global concert tours, the company added.
United said bookings to destinations including Madrid, Barcelona and Reykjavík are up more than 50% ahead of the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse.
The company additionally noted a nearly 20% increase in aggregate bookings to the North American cities hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup games. And U.S. consumers are heading abroad to Amsterdam and London to see Harry Styles live in concert on his "Together, Together" tour.
United noted that Memorial Day weekend--the unofficial start to the summer season--is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods, and is anticipating about 3.9 million passengers from May 21 to 27.
