Uber's Upcoming AV Launches Weaken Tesla-Waymo Dominance Thesis -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05-20 20:16

0815 ET - The bearish thesis on Uber's autonomous vehicles strategy--that the AV market will be dominated by Tesla and Alphabet-owned Waymo--is growing less and less tenable as Uber nears commercial launches of several AV partnerships, Deutsche Bank analysts say in a note following talks with the company's representatives. Two AV partnership launches, one with Amazon's Zoox and the other with Lucid and Nuro, are set to launch this year, while another with Nvidia is slated for 2027. "We contend that investors will have a growing number of proof points that AV supply in the US will not become a concentrated market dominated by only 1-2 players," they say. "We think these launches (if successful) likely represent a meaningful catalyst supporting a gradual removal of the current AV overhang embedded in Uber shares." (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)
