Consumer companies fell after a mixed earnings report from one bellwether.

Shares of Home Depot rose slightly after the home-improvement giant posted fiscal first-quarter earnings ahead of Wall Street estimates, but warned that customers were pulling back on major home renovation projects.

Walmart shares rose as traders bet the discounter would benefit from consumer-spending trends when it reports earnings later in the week.

Rate-sensitive home builders fell as Treasury yields continued their march higher.

Mall-based retailer Gap tapped an executive from Calvin Klein owner PVH, Donald Kohler, to helm its Banana Republic brand.
