Alphabet's YouTube, TikTok Face UK Scrutiny as Child Safety Measures Fall Short

Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) YouTube and TikTok have failed to introduce meaningful new measures to protect children in the UK from harmful online content, the country's media regulator Ofcom said Thursday.

Recommendation feeds remain the main source of harmful content exposure for children, with a research showing that 73% of users aged 11 to 17 years encountered harmful material over a four-week period, according to Ofcom.

Neither company had committed to significant changes to improve the safety of personalized feeds, despite growing pressure from the UK government to strengthen online protections for children, according to the regulator.

Major platforms also are failing to enforce minimum-age rules, as majority of children aged 8 to 12 use services officially restricted to users aged 13 and older, Ofcom said.

YouTube, TikTok did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
