Seven-Eleven Japan Could Grow Operating Profit This Year -- Market Talk

Dow Jones17:05

0905 GMT - Seven & i's freshly made food products and marketing efforts could spur same-store sales growth at its Japanese convenience chain this year, Shunsuke Kuriyama of Jefferies says in a research note. The analyst expects the company's domestic convenience-store business to grow its operating profit to 227 billion yen this fiscal year and by 4.8% the next fiscal year. Seven-Eleven Japan is also closing its performance gap with local rivals, Kuriyama says. He cites 7-Eleven's March-April same-store sales growth of 1.7% in Japan, compared with 0.8% for FamilyMart and 2.5% for Lawson. All Japanese convenience stores saw pent-up demand in March ahead of cigarette price hikes in April, the analyst notes. (farah.elias@wsj.com)
