Pacira BioSciences (PCRX) said Wednesday that a real-world study evaluating Exparel injectable suspension in total shoulder arthroplasty patients showed lower opioid consumption, reduced healthcare costs, and fewer opioid-related adverse events.

The study analyzed data from July 2019 to December 2024 from more than 6,400 opioid-naive Medicare Advantage patients undergoing outpatient total shoulder arthroplasty and compared outcomes between those given Exparel and those who received standard-of-care analgesia, the company said.

Exparel, or bupivacaine liposome, is approved in the US for postsurgical pain management, the company said.
