BHP Tests Biofuel Blend on Iron Ore Carrier, Targets 79% Emissions Reduction

MT Newswires Live06-03

BHP Group (BHP) said Wednesday that it has partnered with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation to pilot a marine biofuel blend made from used cooking oil and waste animal fats.

The biofuel blend is being used aboard the Berge Lyngor, a BHP-chartered bulk carrier transporting iron ore from Western Australia to China, the Australian mining company said.

BHP said the fuel could reduce well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by about 79% per voyage compared with conventional very low sulphur fuel oil.

The trial will evaluate fuel quality, handling, traceability and vessel performance under real-world operating conditions while using existing bunkering infrastructure, it said.
