Mariner Wealth Advisors, a leading national registered investment advisory firm, has been notifying clients that it suffered a data breach that may have compromised personal information such as names, account numbers and Social Security numbers.
Mariner says in a disclosure that the breach affected 8,995 individuals. In a statement, the Overland Park, Kan.-based firm says it "detected and contained a security incident" earlier this year.
"We have no evidence that any personal information was misused, and the incident did not affect financial accounts, investment accounts, or client account systems," the firm says. "Mariner takes the security of information seriously and continues to work with cybersecurity experts. This incident has no impact on the quality of our services or our commitment to clients."
Mariner says that the incident was the result of a hack that targeted certain cloud applications being used by three of its associates. The firm says it detected the suspicious activity Nov. 24, 2025, and immediately initiated its cybersecurity response plan, isolating and securing the affected accounts.
In a letter Mariner has been sending out to affected clients notifying them of the breach, the firm says that the hackers didn't breach any accounts where they could reach clients' funds, which "are stored on entirely separate systems at entirely separate entities that were unaffected by this incident."
The disclosure is the latest reminder that wealth managers face chronic threats from malicious actors looking to infiltrate their IT systems and gain access to sensitive information. A partial list of other advisory firms hit by recent breaches includes Mercer Global Advisors, Beacon Pointe, Betterment, and Ameriprise Financial.
Mariner is offering affected clients a year of a complimentary credit-monitoring service provided by TransUnion.
