Sony Corp. will step up its efforts in physical AI, as the technology is highly compatible with the Japanese company's products such as sensors and cameras, said President and CEO Kenji Tanaka.
Physical AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that enable robots and machines to operate autonomously. "Sony's presence is not strong in a digital-only world, but if physical AI causes interactions between real society and the virtual world, it will instantly make us stronger," he said Tuesday during an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun and other media outlets.
Tanaka assumed the top post at Sony Corp., a subsidiary of conglomerate Sony Group Corp., on April 1.
Tanaka stated that he views AI positively, noting, "We will utilize the technology to create new things." He cited the film industry as an area where it can be applied effectively, as the industry requires enormous amounts of time and money.
"We will initially focus on the entertainment sector, but there are many other areas where it can be utilized," Tanaka said, hinting at the possibility of eventually expanding physical AI-related operations into industries beyond entertainment.
Tanaka noted that the company has begun to establish increased interactions with customers to understand their needs and problems at the operational level.
