European Stocks Extend Falls as Peace Hopes Fade Again -- Market Talk

1511 GMT - European stock indexes fall sharply in afternoon European trade after Iranian media said Tehran suspended peace talks with the U.S. Losses for the Europe-wide Stoxx 600 extend to 1.1% following the Tasnim news agency report, which said that Iranian negotiators were suspending talks in response to Israel's attacks on Lebanon. Tasnim is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Germany's DAX--which opened the day higher--falls 0.6%. In London, the FTSE 100 slides 1.05% as miners and industrials falter. Defense and aerospace company Rolls-Royce is down 5.6%. Industrials also drag the French CAC 40 down 0.95%. The Spanish IBEX 35 falls 1.5%, while the Italian FTSE MIB is down 0.8%. However, rallying software stocks hang on to earlier gains across the continent. (josephmichael.stonor@wsj.com)
