Commerzbank Shares Could Take Hit From Monte dei Paschi Bidding War -- Market Talk

Dow Jones06-08

1100 GMT - Commerzbank shares could fall under selling pressure due to the bidding war for Italian lender Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena if UniCredit weighs in, Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analysts say. Investors might see UniCredit as less likely to raise its offer for Commerzbank if it decides to throw its hat in the ring for Monte dei Paschi, the analysts say. When and how UniCredit gets involved in the Monte dei Paschi saga is a key question for investors, KBW says. UniCredit--the biggest shareholder in Commerzbank--last month launched a tender offer for the shares in the German bank it doesn't already own. Commerzbank shares fall 1.2%, while UniCredit trades 1% lower. (adria.calatayud@wsj.com)
