A probe on Meta Platforms' (META) use of AI tools on its messaging service WhatsApp was stopped by Italy's competition authority due to jurisdictional overlap with European Union regulators, Reuters reported Monday.
In July 2025, the Italian antitrust body initiated an investigation on Meta over concerns that the social media giant had abused its dominant position by installing AI tools into the WhatsApp service, the report said.
Meta may have violated EU rules by integrating the AI assistant into WhatsApp without user consent, a move that might harm its competitors, according to the report.
The Italian regulator, known as AGCM, said it closed its inquiry because the European Commission had expanded its investigation into the same issue to include Italian markets, Reuters reported.
