William R. Berkley, Founder and Executive Chair of W.R. Berkley, Dies at 80

William R. Berkley, the founder, namesake, and executive chairman of W.R. Berkley, died on Tuesday at 80.

His death was announced by the insurance holding company, which didn't specify a cause of death. Berkley founded the business in 1967, and is now one of the world's leading commercial insurance organizations, the company said.

His son, W. Robert Berkley, Jr., will take over as executive chairman effective immediately, the company said.

"My father was more than an extraordinary leader and entrepreneur, whose vision and values shaped the Company," Berkley, Jr. said. "While we are deeply saddened by his passing, we remain committed to carrying forward his values, culture, and long-term perspective."
