The Food and Drug Administration has added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients, marking the first addition in more than 20 years.
The agency said Tuesday this is its first new active ingredient added to the over-the-counter sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s. Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.
"FDA's action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products," he said.
The FDA issued a proposed order for the addition seven months ago. Bemotrizinol provides protection against ultraviolet A and B rays while having low levels of absorption through the skin, the agency said.
