1048 ET - Cracker Barrel shares are climbing after the restaurant's most recent financial report showed a recovery in average check size and retail sales, Benchmark analyst Todd Brooks says. Improving average check size was a positive surprise in the fiscal third quarter, with less aggressive discounting, Brooks says. Retail same-store sales declined 1.8%, compared with Wall Street's consensus of a 6.2% drop, which Brooks says is one of the biggest surprises in Tuesday night's results. It was the first time in four years that Cracker Barrel's retail segment had higher same-store sales than its restaurant operations, Brooks says. Shares jump 27%. (katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
