(Updates with Eli Lilly's response to a request for comment from MT Newswires.)
Some employers in the US intend to drop coverage of GLP-1 medications for weight loss in 2027 amid the increasing popularity of Novo Nordisk's (NVO) Wegovy and Eli Lilly's (LLY) Zepbound and Foundayo, Reuters reported Thursday, citing the Business Group on Health, a policy research group for large employers.
Around 10% of employers who now cover GLP-1 drugs for weight-loss said they are planning to drop that coverage next year, the report said, citing the policy research group.
"Lilly is disappointed by decisions from some employers to drop coverage for obesity management medications," a spokesperson said told MT Newswires. "Obesity is a serious, chronic disease, and coverage decisions should be based on clinical evidence, not coverage barriers that reinforce stigma and disrupt patient care."
Novo Nordisk didn't immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
