Ameris Bancorp (ABCB) will appeal a roughly $79.4 million jury verdict awarded to former executive Patrick Byrne in a wrongful termination and whistleblower case against Ameris Bank, the company said in a filing on Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

On June 12, a California federal jury ruled in Byrne's favor, awarding $16.5 million in compensatory damages and statutory penalties, along with about $62.9 million in punitive damages, citing a filing.

Byrne, who led Ameris Bank's equipment finance division until June 2024, alleged wrongful termination and other violations, while Ameris said it disagrees with the verdict and believes it lacks factual and legal support, it added.
