AstraZeneca's drug Truqap in combination with two other medications secured approval for the treatment of a form of advanced prostate cancer by the Food and Drug Administration.
Approval was based on positive results from a Phase 3 trial and serves as the first targeted treatment for adult patients with a specific form of the disease known as PTEN-deficient metastatic androgen pathway modulation-naïve or sensitive prostate cancer, AstraZeneca said Friday. It was previously referred to as metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.
Truqap, the brand name for capivasertib, can be used in combination with abiraterone and prednisone in patients who haven't yet become resistant to hormone-blocking therapies.
The FDA has also approved a companion diagnostic test to detect PTEN deficiencies in the tumors of patients with prostate adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that develops in cells of the prostate gland.
AstraZeneca is currently trying to get regulatory clearance for the treatment combination in the European Union.
