Alphabet's Waymo Recalls Over 3,800 Robotaxis Over Software Flaw

Alphabet's (GOOG) self-driving unit Waymo is recalling 3,871 robotaxis in the US after identifying a software issue that could cause vehicles to enter closed freeway construction zones and continue driving at speed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday.

The regulator said the recall affects certain vehicles equipped with Waymo's fifth-generation automated driving system.

Waymo is developing a software fix and has restricted freeway-driving operations for affected vehicles until the update is implemented, according to NHTSA.

The company will provide the software update free of charge to improve the automated driving system's ability to detect and avoid entering construction zones, it added.
