Novocure said a late-stage trial evaluating the earlier initiation of treatment for newly diagnosed glioblastoma didn't demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in overall survival. This was when compared with starting treatment during the subsequent maintenance phase of treatment.

The company said Thursday that initiating Tumor Treating Fields, or TTFields, therapy at the start of chemoradiation resulted in a median overall survival rate of 17.7 months, compared with a median overall survival rate of 17.5 months when initiated during the maintenance phase.

"The study did not meet its primary endpoint, but the results from (the trial) demonstrated the feasibility and safety of initiating Tumor Treating Fields therapy during chemoradiation," said Uri Weinberg, Novocure's chief medical and innovation officer.

Shares fell 11%, to $15.90, in premarket trading.
