Hegseth to Press NATO Allies to Boost Defense Spending

MT Newswires Live06-17

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will urge NATO allies to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP and assume greater responsibility for Europe's conventional defense at a meeting in Belgium this week, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

Hegseth will also push allies to expand defense industrial production and field combat-ready forces, according to a Pentagon statement cited by Bloomberg.

The effort is part of the Trump administration's broader push for burden sharing among NATO members and shifting more responsibility for European security onto allies, the report said.

European allies have been preparing for potential reductions in US military commitments to the continent amid uncertainty over future troop deployments, Bloomberg reported.
