Xpeng (XPEV) and BYD are among Chinese electric-vehicle makers introducing larger premium sport utility vehicles as automakers target higher-margin segments despite growing concerns about oversupply, Nikkei Asia reported Monday.
The report said Chinese manufacturers have launched more than 20 full-size SUV models this year, while industry production capacity exceeds estimated annual demand for the segment.
BYD last week launched its Great Tang SUV at a price below its presale level, while Xpeng introduced its GX model at a lower-than-expected starting price, according to the report.
BYD and XPENG did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
