AbbVie (ABBV) said Tuesday that the European Commission approved its therapy, Maviret, for the treatment of acute hepatitis C virus infection in adults and children aged three years and older.

The drugmaker said the approval was supported by phase 3 data showing that Maviret's eight-week treatment regimen was effective in patients with acute HCV infection.

The company said the approval makes Maviret the only therapy approved in the European Union for the treatment of both acute and chronic HCV infection.
