SKF Invests in Steel Waste Recycling Startup Anferra

STOCKHOLM--Ball-bearing maker SKF has invested in Swedish startup Anferra, a company that has developed a process to recycle steel waste.

SKF said it has made the strategic investment together with Stephen Industries and Chalmers Ventures, without disclosing financial details.

Anferra's process converts hazardous steel grinding sludge into ferric chloride, which is a common chemical agent used for wastewater and water treatment. Another by-product is hydrogen gas, which can be further used to store energy.

"Grinding sludge is one of the toughest recycling challenges in the steel and bearing industry," says Mikael Krook, director of SKF Ventures. "Anferra's approach represents a smarter way forward and positions us well to drive circularity and decarbonization."
