Australian Mobile Price Story Showing Signs of Fragility

Dow Jones06-25

0448 GMT - UBS analysts see early signs of fragility in the price-recovery story that has benefited Australian mobile providers over recent years. The investment bank's annual survey of local telecom users shows a rise in the number of consumers inclined to switch providers. So-called churn intentions hadn't risen for six years, the analysts tell clients in a note. However, when asked about actual action if operators raised monthly prices by between 4 and 5 Australian dollars, customers at Telstra and TPG Telecom-owned Vodafone Australia increasingly prefer to stay. Users of Singapore Telecommunications-owned Optus increasingly look to leave, they add. They wonder whether the intentions will translate into more meaningful churn across the sector.
