Apple Appeals $502 Million Patent Payment to Optis in UK Supreme Court

Apple's (AAPL) appeal against a $502 million payment to Optis Cellular Technology over the embedding of patented technology in its own devices will be heard by the UK's Supreme Court Monday, according to the court's website.

In May last year, a London court ordered Apple to pay a lump sum to cover the period from 2013 to 2027 for embedding Optis' standard essential patents, or SEPs, in its own devices.

This appeal concerns the correct approach to determining what terms of a mobile telecommunications technology SEP license are "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory," according to the Supreme Court's website.

Optis originally filed proceedings against Apple back in 2019 for patent infringement and sought a declaration over the terms of a "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory" license for its SEP.
