Apple's Reported Interest in CXMT Memory Validates Its Tech Progress

Dow Jones11:36

0336 GMT - Apple's reported interest in buying CXMT memory chips is a strong validation of its technological progress, Citi analysts say in a research note. According to a media report, Apple is lobbying the Trump administration for approval to buy DRAM from CXMT amid surging memory costs. CXMT is currently included in the Pentagon's list of restricted Chinese companies. Citi reckons that securing approval to procure CXMT memory could prove challenging in the current U.S. political climate. "Regardless of whether Apple gets the purchase approval, its consideration of CXMT as a potential supplier shifts market perception of CXMT from a domestic substitution play to a credible global No.4 DRAM maker," they say.(sherry.qin@wsj.com)
