Amazon.com's Amazon Web Services Launches Forward Deployed Engineering Unit

Amazon.com's (AMZN) Amazon Web Services said Tuesday it is launching a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering, or FDE, organization.

The unit is backed by a $1 billion investment and designed to embed agentic AI into customer deployments, the company said, adding that the FDE model is differentiated in three ways: it is agentic-first, compresses deployment timelines from months to days, and is built so customers can become self-sufficient after implementation ends.

The company said AWS FDEs are already working with customers, including the NBA, Southwest Airlines (LUV), and the NFL.

AWS FDE is designed for organizations that have moved beyond AI experimentation and need production systems embedded in real business workflows, AWS' vice president of frontier AI engineering and services, Francessca Vasquez, said.
