NASA Doles Out More Money for Lunar Missions

Building a moon base has been atop NASA's to-do list. The agency doled out new contracts to help inform how to set up the lunar outpost.

Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines and Astrobotic won awards to ferry an identical set of payloads to the lunar surface by the end of 2028. All three have attempted or conducted cargo missions to the moon for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration before, with mixed results.

The devices will also give the agency new data about the moon's environment and landing hazards, as well as set location markers that could be used during future missions, Joel Kearns, a leader in NASA's science group, said Tuesday.

The contracts reflect how NASA is putting money toward its grand ambition of having people living and working on the moon.

Astrobotic, which has agreed to be taken over by Voyager Technologies, won two flights--valued at roughly $298 million--carrying the NASA payloads to the moon. Firefly and Intuitive secured one mission each, valued at $144 million and $148 million, respectively.

Shares in Voyager rose 6.9.% on Tuesday. Firefly and Intuitive gained 1.2% and 2%, respectively.
