President Trump said on Thursday that he would carry on with efforts to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, after the Supreme Court ruled this week that she can stay in her position while she challenges his attempt to fire her.
Asked during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box how he would remove Cook, Trump replied: "By winning the case." Cook has argued in a lawsuit that Trump's attempt to fire her violated a federal law that says the president may remove Fed members only "for cause." Two lower courts blocked Trump from firing her while her lawsuit proceeded. The Supreme Court's decision maintains that block, meaning Cook can stay in her job for months or even years while her case goes back to the lower courts for further litigation.
Trump noted that the Supreme Court "sent it back, not based on the merits. They sent it back based on process and procedure."
"So we'll start the process, and we'll do perfect process and perfect procedure," he said.
Trump also said that next week he will ring the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange opening bell from the Oval Office. He didn't say which day he would ring the bell.
