Amazon.com-backed (AMZN) Anthropic has begun early-stage work on developing its own artificial intelligence chip and has held discussions with Samsung Electronics as a potential manufacturing partner, The Information reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Claude developer is in the early stages of designing a custom AI chip, holding talks with multiple chip design firms and hiring former OpenAI chip engineer Clive Chan to support the effort, according to the report.

The Information said the project reflects Anthropic's effort to gain greater control over its AI computing infrastructure, though the company may ultimately decide not to proceed with the chip.

Anthropic and Samsung Electronics did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
