Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI is in preliminary discussions to give a 5% stake to the US government, the Financial Times reported Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
The proposal from OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and other executives is part of a broader arrangement under which 5% equity of each of the leading AI developers in the US would be held by Washington, the FT reported.
It is unclear whether other players such as Anthropic PBC, as well as listed companies Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Meta Platforms (META), would agree with the ChatGPT owner's proposal, the newspaper said.
OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
