Market Chatter: Online Media Platforms Struggling to Effectuate Australian Social-Media Age Rules

Online media platforms are struggling to effectuate age checks for users, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a testing firm that advised the national government on the policy.

Since December, Canberra has mandated that popular platforms such as Facebook, Tik Tok, X, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube bar users under 16 years of age from having accounts.

But the Australian-based testing firm KJR found social-media platforms did not ask for age proof on any of the 50 accounts it opened after the law was enacted, the testing firm told Reuters.

Representatives for Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX), Snap (SNAP) and TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
