Microsoft's Xbox to Reduce Workforce by 3,200 Jobs; Establishes New COO Role

Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox will reduce its workforce by about 3,200 jobs throughout fiscal 2027, including 1,600 jobs being cut immediately and four studios leaving for new management, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in a blog post Monday.

Xbox has also established a chief operating officer position and promoted Helen Chiang to the role, Sharma said, adding that the company will work to reduce management layers to no more than five, and where possible to three.

As part of the changes, Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will transition to independent studios with their intellectual property, catalog, and runway for their next games. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will join new ownership, and with studios Mojang and King henceforth reporting directly to Sharma, according to a statement.

Microsoft shares were 1.6% lower in Monday trading.
