Cantor Sees 'clear Strategic Rationale' Behind Vertex's Buy of Crinetics

Dow Jones07-07

Vertex Pharmaceuticals' roughly $10 billion purchase of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals provides another near-term launch narrative with Palsonify, a treatment for acromegaly, Cantor analysts say in a research note. It also offers a clinically compelling program with multi-blockbuster potential in atumelnant, a possible treatment for congenital adrenal hyperplasia and Cushing's Syndrome, the analysts add. "Together, these assets give Vertex a foothold in endocrinology--a fifth therapeutic area for the company," they write. "We see clear strategic rationale: addition of solid, innovative science, with atumelnant carrying relatively modest binary risk." Vertex shares are roughly flat in premarket trading Tuesday, while Crinetics shares double. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
