UniCredit increased its stake in Commerzbank to close to half following a takeover bid that values the bank at some 42.5 billion euros.

The Italian lender said Wednesday that it secured 47.59% of Commerzbank shares after the bid's offer period ended last week, tallying shares tendered with UniCredit's existing direct stake and another smaller stake to which it has economic rights.

UniCredit's stake in Commerzbank was 42.5% after the close of the initial offer period in June. A small percentage of institutional investors were shown to have tendered their shares.

UniCredit earlier this year made an all-stock bid for the Commerzbank shares it didn't already own. A successful takeover would mark the biggest banking deal in Europe since the 2008-09 crisis.
