Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) has completed the tape-out process for Tesla's next-generation AI5 chip at its Taylor, Texas, semiconductor plant, paving the way for mass production as early as the end of the year, Pulse News reported Tuesday, citing industry sources.
AI5 production is expected to be shared between Samsung and TSMC (TPE:2330), with the Taylor facility set to begin commercial operations using the chip as its first major production program.
Tape-out, the final stage of chip design before manufacturing, marks the completion of preparations for mass production. The milestone is a boost for Samsung's foundry business as it seeks to narrow the gap with industry leader TSMC, the report said.
Samsung and Tesla did not immediately respond to MTNewswires' request for comment.
