Broadcasters Climb on FCC Plan to End Tv-station Ownership Cap

Shares of big broadcasters rose after the Federal Communications Commission said it would repeal a limit on the ownership of TV stations.

Nexstar Media, which owns more than 200 television stations spanning the U.S. and recently bought rival Tegna, climbed 5.2%, to $184.40. Shares of Sinclair, E.W. Scripps and Gray Media each gained between 6% and 10%.

The FCC said Wednesday that it would vote early next month on an order repealing the current ownership rules that limit any one company's reach to 39% of the nation's television homes.

The agency said it seeks to replace the cap with a case-by-case review, allowing it to approve deals that "promote the public interest." FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has shown support for deregulating TV-station ownership rules.
