Canfor is closing its Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, British Columbia, citing a global oversupply of pulp contributing to "unsustainable financial losses" for its pulp division.
The company said around 300 employees will be directly impacted by the closure. It also expects a reduction of about 300,000 tones of Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft from the mill.
Canfor said its decision was driven by an oversupply of pulp, which has pressured global pulp prices down, as well as difficult access to fibre.
"These factors have resulted in a prolonged period of unsustainable financial losses for Canfor Pulp," the company said. "With no foreseeable improvement in the outlook, Canfor has made the difficult decision to close its Northwood facility."
The mill is expected to follow a wind-down process and close late in the fourth quarter.
