Volkswagen Likely Had Solid Quarter in Tough Conditions

Dow Jones07-15

0850 GMT - Volkswagen is expected to report a solid quarter, excluding China, Citi analysts write. "VW management is doing an excellent job in the face of intense headwinds in China, in Europe, and in the U.S.," the bank says. The German automaker expects its second-quarter margin to be within the 4.0%-5.5% guidance range, which in these market conditions looks a very solid performance, supported by 10% quarter-on-quarter sales growth excluding China, Citi adds. The bank views VW's proposed strategic changes as a further positive, although union opposition may dilute any outcome. "However, investors will likely await any negotiation outcome, and or trough in EBIT margins, even at this extreme low valuation." Citi rates Volkswagen at buy with a 94 euro target price. Shares rise 0.3% to 73.85 euros. (dominic.chopping@wsj.com)
