Madrigal Pharmaceuticals' Three New Patents Support Patent Extension Into 2045, Truist Says

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals (MDGL) announced three new patents for resmetirom earlier Monday, further strengthening its intellectual property portfolio and supporting the case for patent extension through 2045, Truist Securities said Monday.

The three new patents add to the patent covering weight-threshold dosing for resmetirom that was granted last year, providing potential protection into 2045, with competition from generics unlikely until then, according to the note.

While resmetirom is the only THR-beta agonist approved for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, Truist believes that any drug of the same mechanism of action would struggle to displace it due to these patents, the note added.

Truist said the third patent covering the treatment of well-compensated cirrhosis provides additional support for the next growth phase in advanced liver disease, as an expansion into F4 would nearly double the addressable market.

Truist kept its buy rating with a price target of $709.
