Amazon's Zoox unit recalled more than a hundred robotaxis, citing an issue with its software that may prevent it from detecting heavy smoke.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said failing to detect heavy smoke could allow the vehicle to enter areas of low visibility, particularly active emergency scenes, which can increase the risk of a crash or impede first responders.
The defect is estimated to affect the automated driving system software released and installed on all of the 105 Zoox driverless robotaxis operating on public roads since April 23, according to an NHTSA recall report.
Zoox released an updated software to all affected vehicles Wednesday, and will continue to monitor field performance, the report said.
