NIKE (NKE) would have preferred a different outcome to the FIFA World Cup final after Spain and Argentina, both sponsored by Adidas, faced off in Sunday's championship match, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing an internal memo.
Camilo Andrade, Nike's vice president and general manager of football, said in the memo that the ending "was not what we dreamed" but added the company had "done our job" and executed its strategy despite missing out on having a Nike-sponsored team in the final, according to the report.
Bloomberg said Nike also faced criticism over its World Cup jerseys and production delays that affected merchandise availability. Andrade said the company sees a significant opportunity in women's football ahead of next year's Women's World Cup in Brazil, according to the report.
