It will be determined by price. \nSolid-state batteries: technology promise to price reality \nSolid-state batteries have moved beyond laboratory validation and into pilot-scale development, with OEM roadmaps pointing toward initial commercialization later this decade. \nYet the gap between technical feasibility and commercial viability remains substantial. Fastmarkets’ analysis anchors this gap in a simple but powerful framework: \nConventional lithium-ion, particularly LFP, already sets a low-cost benchmark. In China, LFP cells were priced at $54.63 per kWh in April 2026, a figure that has climbed 13.6% year on year, reflecting upstream pressure rather than cost maturity stalling. \nIn Western markets, the premium is pronounced: cross-location modeling from Fastmarkets’ Battery Cost Index shows that the same LFP cell produced in Germany, the US, Poland or Hungary carries a substantially higher cost structure than its Chinese equivalent, with materials assumed to be shipped from China in all cases. \nSolid-state must not just compete technologically. It must close this cost gap at scale. \nThis defines the competitive reality. SSBs are not entering a vacuum. They are entering a market already shaped by chemistries with established, if increasingly pressured, cost structures. \nThe Fastmarkets threshold: key EV market signal for scale \nWithin this context, Fastmarkets introduces a key market signal: a provisional threshold of $85 per kWh as a proof-of-concept benchmark for mass-market scalability. \nThis is not an arbitrary figure. It serves three critical analytical functions. \n\nFirst, it provides a tangible point at which solid-state production can begin to demonstrate industrial credibility, even before achieving full parity with lithium-ion. \nSecond, it allows stakeholders to track progress from pilot production to early commercial runs to scalable manufacturing using a consistent cost benchmark. \nThird, it reframes the debate away from open-ended technological timelines and toward observable economic milestones. The $85 per kWh figure is not the destination, but it is a necessary checkpoint on the path to commercial adoption. \n\nTo understand how demanding that checkpoint is, current lithium-ion data provides useful grounding. Among NCM chemistries in China, NCM-811, the lowest-cost ternary option, was priced at $66.89 per kWh in April 2026, up 14.8% year on year. NCM-622 reached $72.21 per kWh. \nSolid-state cells must therefore achieve costs within roughly 25–30% of today’s lowest-cost incumbent before reaching the $85 threshold, and must do so with far less mature supply chains and manufacturing infrastructure. \nWhy cost and not performance will be the gating factor \nThe Next10 analysis highlights a structural tension across expert views. Some participants frame scaling as an execution challenge, solvable through yield improvements, process innovation, and supply chain maturation. For an NCM-811 cell made in China in April 2026, cathode active material (CAM) alone accounted for 58.7% of total cell cost. \nWithin that, lithium represented 17.6% of total cost and nickel 17.4%. These input dependencies are not managed through engineering alone. They are managed through scale, contracted supply, and sustained market transparency, all of which take years to develop. \nSolid-state faces the same structural challenge, amplified by the immaturity of its own input markets. \nPricing signals across the SSB value chain \nThe report makes clear that pricing pressure is not confined to the cell level. It will emerge across the full SSB value chain. For materials, critical inputs, particularly solid electrolytes and separator materials, remain immature markets with limited scale. \nThe BCI data for conventional cells shows that even established separator and electrolyte markets for lithium-ion contribute a combined 6.7% to NCM-811 cell costs. For SSBs, analogous inputs will carry significantly higher unit costs until volume develops. \nFor manufacturing, production yields remain insufficient for cost-efficient large-scale output. The BCI’s manufacturing cost model, which covers 45 manufacturing inputs including CAPEX, equipment, labor and energy, shows that for NCM-811 cells in China, operational costs account for 10.5% of the total cell cost even at gigafactory scale. For SSB producers still in pilot phase, these proportions will be materially higher. \nFor architecture, innovations such as anodeless designs may reduce manufacturing complexity and improve cost structures over time. \nTogether, these factors reinforce a central conclusion. Cost competitiveness will only emerge through coordinated progress across materials, process, and scale, not through a single breakthrough. \nThe geopolitical layer \nA further dimension that the BCI data makes concrete: cost trajectories for any battery chemistry are not solely a function of technology maturity. They are exposed to geopolitical supply disruption. \nThe May 2026 BCI documents several active pressures on conventional lithium-ion costs. The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted aluminium metal supply, pushing up current collector costs.\nWith roughly 9% of global aluminium supply originating from Gulf states, smelting capacity has been directly affected in some cases by Iranian drone strikes. US-Iran tensions have simultaneously disrupted sulfur supply, which underpins the cost of sulfuric acid, a key reagent in phosphorus refining. \nFastmarkets estimates that 51% of China’s sulfur supply is sourced from countries whose refining capacity was affected by the conflict. \nDRC export constraints continue to support cobalt prices despite broadly rangebound trading, while China’s dominance in graphite production keeps natural graphite markets structurally stagnant even as synthetic graphite costs rise on stronger ESS demand. \nThese are not marginal dynamics. They are structural features of the critical minerals landscape that any next-generation battery technology, including solid-state, will inherit and must price into long-term cost modeling. \nTracking the price tipping point \nFastmarkets’ pricing framework aligns with several observable market signals identified in the report: cell costs approaching or falling below approximately $85 per kWh, convergence on a dominant electrolyte or separator system, demonstration of high manufacturing yields, and validation of cost parity with high-nickel lithium-ion cells. \nThe BCI’s forward-looking cost forecasts offer a reference point for the last of these. For Q2 2026, Fastmarkets forecasts base case NCM prismatic production costs of $63.9 per kWh and LFP prismatic costs of $54.6 per kWh, both higher than the previous quarter’s forecast of $61.0 and $51.0 per kWh, respectively. \nUpward revisions were driven by lithium price increases, higher nickel and cobalt sulfate costs for NCM cells, and other materials costs. Manufacturing costs saw a modest reduction of approximately $0.3 per kWh for both chemistries as automation investment is modeled to continue. \nThese signals matter because they are measurable, comparable and market-facing. \nA more realistic timeline for solid-state battery adoption \nThe report suggests a phased pathway: demonstration and pilot deployment from 2026 to 2028, niche commercialization from 2028 to 2030, and potential broader adoption in the early 2030s, contingent on cost and scale milestones. \nFrom a pricing perspective, this timeline reinforces a critical point. Adoption will accelerate not when the technology is proven, but when it is priced competitively. \nThe BCI’s long-range forecast to 2031 shows base case lithium-ion costs continuing to evolve, with other materials costs, lithium and manufacturing automation all playing roles in the trajectory.
